Wood-burning fireplaces remain the gold standard for ambiance and heating value — but they require correct installation, regular maintenance, and occasional repair to stay safe and efficient. Texas Chimney Experts handles this work across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex following NFPA 211 standards. Free inspection, written quote, no surprise fees.
What’s actually involved
Wood-burning fireplaces fall into two categories: traditional masonry fireplaces (built on-site with brick firebox and clay flue) and prefabricated fireplaces (factory-built metal firebox with metal chimney chase). Both have specific maintenance, repair, and replacement considerations.
Common wood-burning fireplace work: annual sweep + inspection (NFPA 211 standard), firebox refractory repair, damper repair or replacement, chimney crown and cap work, and full unit replacement when a prefab fireplace reaches end of life (typically 25-30 years).
Conversion considerations: many DFW homeowners with original wood-burning fireplaces convert to gas inserts for convenience. We do these conversions while preserving the original masonry. Reverse conversion (gas back to wood) is also common in homes where the gas conversion was poorly done.
Whether your wood-burning fireplace is original 1955 masonry or a 1995 prefab, we inspect, maintain, repair, and (when needed) replace — preserving the original fireplace character whenever possible.
Why this matters in DFW specifically
DFW’s housing stock includes both eras — solid 1920s-1960s masonry fireplaces in older neighborhoods (Lakewood, M Streets, Highland Park) and prefab fireplaces in 1990s-2000s subdivision homes (Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Allen). Each has different maintenance and end-of-life considerations. Masonry fireplaces last 100+ years with maintenance; prefab fireplaces last 25-30 years before factory parts (firebox lining, refractory panels) reach end of life and full unit replacement is the right call.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my prefab fireplace needs replacement?
Cracked refractory panels (the rear and side panels of the firebox), warping or cracking of the metal firebox, missing or rotted insulation around the firebox, or visible heat damage to the surrounding wall framing. Most prefab fireplaces show these signs at 20-30 years of age.
Can I burn anything in a wood-burning fireplace?
Only seasoned hardwood. Never burn pressure-treated lumber, painted wood, plywood, or trash — all produce toxic combustion products and accelerate creosote buildup. Softwoods (pine, cedar) burn fast and produce more creosote than hardwoods.
How often should I sweep my wood-burning fireplace?
Annually, regardless of how often you use it. NFPA 211 and CSIA both recommend the same.
Should I convert to gas?
Depends on your usage. If you burn 30+ fires per year and value the wood-burning experience — keep it. If you burn 5-10 fires per year and want convenience — gas insert conversion may make sense. We’ll discuss honestly without push for either direction.
Can a damaged wood-burning fireplace be safe to use?
Not without repair. Cracks in the firebox or flue let combustion products and heat reach the surrounding framing. Wait until the inspection is complete and repairs are done before lighting another fire.
