Preparing Your Fireplace for Winter — A DFW Checklist

In Dallas-Fort Worth, the first hard cold front usually hits in late October or early November. Most calls we get for “smoke in the room” or “the damper won’t open” come during the week of that first front, when fireplaces that haven’t been used since February are suddenly pressed back into service. A short pre-season checklist prevents most of those calls.

TL;DR — The quick answer

Schedule a sweep and Level 1 inspection in late summer or early fall (August–October). Then verify the cap, damper, smoke alarms, and CO detectors before the first burn. Stock seasoned firewood now if you don’t have it — properly seasoned wood needs 6–12 months of drying. Test the fireplace with a small fire on a mild day, not on the night of the first cold front.

The pre-season checklist

1. Schedule the annual sweep and inspection

Call by August or September. Late October through December is peak season for sweeps in DFW; wait times stretch to 3–4 weeks, and fewer slots are available. A pre-season sweep includes the Level 1 inspection — see Chimney Sweep vs Inspection for the difference.

2. Inspect the cap and crown from the ground

  • Is the cap visibly bent, missing, or loose?
  • Are there obvious cracks in the crown (the cement top of the chimney)?
  • Is the flashing pulling away from the chimney sides?

If yes to any of these, raise it with the sweep tech during the visit. Cap and crown problems are easy to fix in summer, harder in winter.

3. Test the damper

Open and close the damper several times. It should move smoothly. Common problems:

  • Stuck closed (rust, debris)
  • Stuck open (broken plate, missing lever)
  • Won’t seal (warped from a chimney fire, animal damage)

4. Verify smoke and CO detectors

  • One smoke detector per level, plus inside and outside each sleeping area
  • One CO detector per level, near sleeping areas
  • Fresh batteries (or replacement of 10-year sealed units past their date)
  • Test by pressing the test button on each unit

5. Check inside the firebox

  • Cracks in the firebox masonry? Note them; ask the inspector.
  • Loose firebricks? They can be re-seated; they shouldn’t be ignored.
  • Black staining above the firebox opening on the wall? Possible draft problem.
  • Damp or musty smell? Possible cap or flashing failure.

6. Stock seasoned firewood

“Seasoned” means split and stacked at least 6–12 months, with moisture content under 20%. In DFW:

  • **Best burners:** post oak, red oak, pecan, hickory, ash
  • **Acceptable:** mesquite (hot but fast), live oak (dense, slow)
  • **Avoid:** unseasoned anything, pine or cedar as a regular fuel, treated lumber

A moisture meter (under $25 at hardware stores) tells you if the wood is ready.

7. Clear the area around the firebox

  • 36″ minimum clearance from combustibles per most codes
  • Move rugs, draperies, and decor away from the hearth
  • Verify the spark guard or screen is in place if not using glass doors

8. Test burn on a mild day

The first fire of the season is best lit on a 50-degree afternoon, not at 8pm on the first sub-freezing night.

  • Open the damper fully
  • Crack a window in the room for makeup air
  • Start with a small amount of kindling and one or two splits
  • Watch for smoke spillage, draft reversal, or unusual smell
  • Let the fire burn down; don’t load up immediately

If the test fire smokes into the room, stop and call us. Common causes: closed damper, blocked cap, cold flue (on a humid day, especially), or pressure imbalance from an HVAC system.

Common DFW pre-season problems we find

  • **Cap blown off in spring storm.** Birds and squirrels have nested in the flue.
  • **Damper rusted shut.** Humidity over the off-season corroded the assembly.
  • **Cracked crown from previous freeze.** Now waterlogged, will spall masonry the next freeze.
  • **Wasp or yellowjacket nest.** Common in unused flues and chase covers.
  • **Stage 2 creosote** that the homeowner forgot to address last spring.

All of these are fixable; none should be discovered the night of the first cold front.

FAQ

When is the busiest sweep season in DFW?

October 15 through December 20. Booking before October 1 gets you the best schedule and pricing.

Can I burn last year’s leftover wood?

If it was properly seasoned and stored dry, yes. If it sat outside uncovered all year, it may have re-absorbed moisture; check with a moisture meter.

My damper is stuck. What do I do?

Don’t force it. Schedule a service call. Forcing a stuck damper often breaks the assembly, which then requires replacement.

Should I use a chimney balloon in summer?

A chimney balloon (or top-sealing damper) reduces summer heat loss and keeps animals out. Useful for unused fireplaces.

What if my fireplace hasn’t been used in years?

Schedule a Level 2 inspection">Level 2 inspection before any use. Long-dormant chimneys typically have animal nests, deteriorated tiles, or other issues.

Are gas fireplaces also part of the pre-season check?

Yes. Gas appliances should be inspected annually, pilot tested, and have logs cleaned and re-positioned.
