A chimney without a proper cap is a chimney that will leak water, attract animals, and accumulate debris until something fails — and the fix is one of the cheapest preventive steps you can take. Texas Chimney Experts handles this work across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex following NFPA 211 standards. Free inspection, written quote, no surprise fees.
What’s actually involved
A chimney cap is the metal cover that sits on top of a chimney flue. It serves four functions: keeping rain out of the flue, keeping animals from nesting inside, preventing burning embers from escaping onto the roof, and (with downdraft hoods) reducing wind-induced backdraft on windy days.
Most homes built before 2010 in DFW either have no cap, have a galvanized steel cap that has rusted through, or have a thin aluminum cap that has been damaged by hail. Replacement with a proper stainless steel cap is the long-term fix.
We install single-flue caps, multi-flue caps (for chimneys with two or more flues sharing one chase), and full chase-top covers (which combine the chase cover and flue caps in one piece). Each is sized to the specific chimney; we don’t install off-the-shelf one-size-fits-all caps.
Installation is typically a single 1-2 hour visit on the roof. We measure on the first visit if the cap needs to be custom-fabricated; otherwise we install from inventory the same day for standard sizes.
Why this matters in DFW specifically
DFW chimneys without caps fill with debris (oak leaves, pecan twigs, juniper needles) faster than colder climates because of the dense suburban tree canopy. Add the hailstorms that destroy thin aluminum caps and the freeze-thaw that rusts galvanized caps, and most chimneys in this region need cap replacement every 15-25 years if they were ever capped at all.
Our process
- Roof assessment and measurement — We assess access, photograph the existing cap (if any), measure flue dimensions, and confirm what type of cap is appropriate for your chimney.
- Cap fabrication or selection — Standard sizes installed from inventory same-day. Custom sizes fabricated in our shop in 5-10 business days from stainless stock.
- Installation — Old cap removed (if any), flue top inspected for damage, new cap fitted and sealed with high-temp silicone, fastened to flue.
- Inspection and warranty — Photos of the completed install, warranty paperwork (lifetime cap, 5-year workmanship), and care instructions.
Materials and standards
We install 304-grade stainless steel caps with copper hood options for premium installations. Mesh sizing is matched to local wildlife — typically 5/8-inch mesh in DFW (excludes squirrels, raccoons, birds while allowing full draft). All sealants are high-temperature silicone rated for chimney use.

Frequently asked questions
Do I really need a chimney cap?
Yes. The cost is small ($285-$475 for most homes) and the long-term protection is significant: prevents water damage, animal entry, ember escape, and downdraft. Going without a cap is asking for one of these problems.
How long does a stainless cap last?
Properly installed stainless steel caps last 30+ years in DFW conditions. Galvanized caps last 8-15 years; aluminum caps fail to hail within 5-10 years. Stainless is the only material we install for long-term value.
What if my chimney already has a cap?
We inspect it and tell you honestly: if it’s fine, you don’t need to replace. If it’s rusted, dented, or undersized, we quote replacement. We don’t recommend replacement of caps that don’t need it.
Can I install one myself?
If you’re comfortable on a roof and the cap is a standard friction-fit single-flue, you could. But proper sealing at the flue and proper mesh sizing for your specific chimney are details that matter — and most DIY caps fail within 2-3 years from incorrect installation.
Will a cap reduce draft?
A properly sized cap with the right mesh has negligible effect on draft. An undersized cap or one with mesh that’s too fine can restrict draft — which is why correct sizing matters.
