Title (60ch):Dryer Vent Cleaning & Fire Prevention | TCE Dallas Description (150ch): Dryer fires cause ~2,900 home fires per year, mostly from clogged vents. Here’s how often to clean, warning signs, and what professional service involves.

Dryer Vent Cleaning and Fire Prevention

*By Marcus Rivera, CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep — Updated May 8, 2026*

The U.S. Fire Administration estimates around 2,900 home fires per year are caused by clothes dryers, and failure to clean is the leading factor. Lint is highly flammable, dryer ducts trap it, and the combination of trapped lint and dryer heat is a known ignition risk. This guide explains how often to clean, what warning signs mean, and what proper professional service looks like.

TL;DR — The quick answer

Have your dryer vent professionally cleaned at least once a year for a typical household. Larger families, longer duct runs, and homes with vents that exit through the roof should clean every 6–9 months. Cleaning the lint trap after every load is required but is not a substitute — most lint that causes fires is in the duct, not the trap.

Why dryer vents catch fire

A dryer pushes warm, moist air through a duct to the outside of the house. Lint that escapes the trap settles inside the duct, especially at bends and at the exterior vent flap. As the duct fills:

1. Airflow drops, so drying takes longer

2. The dryer’s heating element runs longer to compensate

3. The duct itself heats up around the lint

4. Eventually the lint reaches its ignition point — around 400°F

A clogged vent doesn’t always start a fire. Sometimes it just kills the dryer’s high-limit thermostat, ruins the heating element, or fills the laundry room with humidity that grows mold. But the fire risk is real, documented, and entirely preventable with maintenance.

Warning signs your vent needs cleaning

  • Clothes take more than one cycle to dry
  • The dryer or laundry room feels unusually hot during use
  • A burning smell during operation
  • The exterior vent flap doesn’t open when the dryer runs
  • Visible lint around the dryer or vent exterior
  • The dryer’s high-limit thermostat keeps tripping
  • It’s been over 12 months since the last cleaning

Any one of these is enough reason to call. A burning smell warrants stopping use until the vent has been inspected.

How often to clean

Frequency depends on how much you use the dryer and how the duct is configured:

| Use pattern | Recommended cleaning |

|—|—|

| 1–2 loads per week, short straight duct | Annual |

| Typical family (5–10 loads/week), normal duct | Annual |

| Large family or daily use, long or complex duct | Every 6–9 months |

| Roof-vented duct (collects more lint) | Every 6–9 months |

| Side-by-side stackable in tight space | Annual, with extra attention |

| Commercial / multi-family laundry | Every 3–6 months |

What professional cleaning includes

A proper dryer vent cleaning isn’t a leaf blower aimed at the duct. CSIA-aligned service involves:

1. Disconnect the dryer from the duct

2. Inspect the transition hose for kinks, crushing, or foil-tape failure

3. Brush the entire duct from the dryer end to the exterior with a rotating brush extension

4. HEPA vacuum lint as it’s loosened (rather than blowing it through the structure)

5. Inspect and clean the exterior vent hood and flap

6. Verify the flap operates freely

7. Test airflow with the dryer running

8. Confirm exhaust temperature is in normal range

Total time: 45–90 minutes for a typical residential vent.

Common installation problems we find

Many dryer vent failures aren’t from neglect — they’re from bad installation:

  • **Foil flex duct used as the main run.** The corrugations trap lint. Code requires smooth-wall metal duct for the in-wall run.
  • **Excessive bends.** Each 90-degree elbow adds the equivalent of 5 feet of straight run; codes typically cap total equivalent length at 35 feet.
  • **Crushed transition hose.** Pushing the dryer back against the wall flattens the hose and chokes airflow.
  • **Improper termination.** Vents that dump into the attic, crawl space, or garage rather than outside.
  • **Bird and pest entry.** Damaged or missing exterior flaps invite nesting.

We document and report these conditions so they can be corrected — sometimes during the same visit, sometimes by a contractor.

When to call us

If it’s been more than a year since cleaning, if you’ve noticed any warning signs, or if you’ve moved into a home with no service history, schedule before the next load. We service the DFW metro and can typically book within a week.

Call 214-444-8103 to schedule dryer vent cleaning, or to bundle it with an annual chimney sweep.

FAQ

Can I clean my dryer vent myself?

You can clean the lint trap and the visible portion of the transition hose. Cleaning the in-wall duct properly requires a rotating brush kit and sometimes roof access. Most DIY cleanings miss the bends where lint actually accumulates.

How long does professional cleaning take?

Typically 45–90 minutes including inspection and testing.

What does it cost in DFW?

Standard residential pricing runs $129–$–+ depending on duct length and configuration. Roof-vented systems and commercial setups cost more.

Will cleaning extend my dryer’s life?

Yes, significantly. A clean vent reduces stress on the heating element, motor, and high-limit thermostat. Most dryer failures we see are downstream of vent clogs.

Is roof venting better or worse?

Roof venting is more common in modern construction but tends to collect more lint at the top of the run. It needs more frequent attention.

Can a clogged dryer vent cause carbon monoxide?

Only if the dryer is gas. A clogged vent on a gas dryer can cause incomplete combustion and CO buildup in the laundry room.

Do you also do chimney sweeps?

Yes. Many of our clients schedule chimney sweep and dryer vent cleaning together, which we discount as a combined visit.
