• 3. Understand what cracks mean structurally — One or two tiles with hairline cracks reads as minor liner failure — HeatShield or a stainless liner addresses it. Cracks running across multiple tiles, or a tile that has shifted, reads as full liner failure, and relining is the only safe path forward. How serious are cracked flue tiles, really?

As serious as chimney findings get. The liner's entire function is containing heat and combustion gases inside the flue, away from the masonry and framing. A crack defeats that function — and the fires it produces are typically slow-developing wall fires that ignite hours after the last burn.

Can I just patch the cracks?

Field-applied patch products fail two tests: they don't bond reliably to aged clay tile, and they restore no structural integrity. Only engineered systems — HeatShield and stainless liners — meet NFPA 211.

How is HeatShield different from a stainless liner?

HeatShield rebuilds the existing tiles in place with a ceramic compound applied by a specialized tool. A stainless liner replaces the entire flue path with new metal pipe. HeatShield disturbs less of the chimney but requires tile structure sound enough to carry the restoration.

Will my insurance cover this?

Coverage turns on cause. Sudden events — a lightning strike, an earthquake — are typically covered; age-related wear and tear is excluded. The Level 2 report establishes which category applies, so keep every page of the documentation.

Can I use the fireplace ‘just for special occasions’?
