When an inspection flags crumbling mortar joints on a chimney, you'll hear two words — tuckpointing and repointing — used as if they mean the same thing. They're related but not identical, and the more important point is what they share: both depend on grinding out failed mortar and replacing it correctly, and both are ruined by using a mortar that doesn't match the original. Here's what each actually is and why that material match is the code-aware detail that decides whether the repair lasts decades or fails the next inspection.
01Repointing — the structural repair
Repointing is the core work: grinding out the deteriorated mortar from the joints to a sound depth and packing in fresh mortar to restore the joint. Mortar is the sacrificial element in masonry — it's designed to fail before the brick does — so over decades it erodes, cracks, and lets water in. Repointing rebuilds those joints, restores the chimney's weather resistance, and stops the water intrusion that drives spalling and the structural decline an inspection grades as a defect. It's a structural and waterproofing repair, not a cosmetic one.
02Tuckpointing — the finish technique
Tuckpointing is a refinement of the same process with an aesthetic dimension: it uses two contrasting mortar colors to create the crisp, fine lines of a precise joint, historically to make ordinary brickwork read as finely-jointed masonry. In everyday use the word has come to cover joint-repair work generally, but strictly speaking tuckpointing is about the finished appearance of the joint, while repointing is about restoring the function and weather seal an inspection actually grades. On a premium home, the finish detail is worth getting right on top of the structural fix.
03Why the mortar type is everything
Here's the part that fails repairs done cheaply: the new mortar has to match the strength of the original. Old masonry was built with softer, lime-rich mortar that flexes with the brick. Patch it with a modern hard Portland-cement mortar and the rigid new joint won't move with the wall — so the brick faces spall and crack instead of the mortar, and you've manufactured the exact spalling defect a future inspection will write up. Matching the mortar to the masonry is the code-aware difference between a repair that lasts and one that destroys the brick it was meant to save.
Repointing restores the function of failing mortar joints; tuckpointing is the finished, fine-lined version of that work — and in common usage the terms overlap. What doesn't overlap is the consequence of the wrong mortar: too hard, and you spall the brick you meant to protect and create the next inspection finding yourself. If your chimney's joints are crumbling or open, the code-correct repair grinds them out and replaces them with a mortar matched to the original, then protects the result with breathable waterproofing.
