This stage develops when the fire runs cooler and smokier than it should: wet wood, a restricted air supply, an oversized flue that lets the exhaust cool too fast, or long, low overnight burns. The condensed tar then hardens into shiny black flakes that cling to the flue walls.

Removal at Stage 2 is still possible, but nothing dusts off anymore. The job calls for a more aggressive mechanical approach, a rotary whip-rod system fitted with the correct head for the flue type; on a stainless liner that means poly heads only, never wire, so the corrugations are never scored. Allowed to accumulate, this buildup narrows the flue, worsens draft, and feeds the smolder-and-condense cycle that pushes the system toward the dangerous third stage.

03Stage 3 — glazed creosote, the dangerous one

Hard, glazed, and mirror-like, Stage 3 creosote is a glassy, tar-like coating fused to the flue wall, and it is the most dangerous form there is. This is the fuel that converts a routine fire into a chimney fire: glazed creosote ignites at temperatures near 2,000°F, hot enough to crack and puff clay tiles, craze a liner, warp metal components, and breach the structure so the next ordinary fire becomes a house fire.

No standard brushing will touch Stage 3 glaze. Breaking it down takes rotary chain modification or a chemical treatment that lets the deposit be mechanically removed, and in severe cases the honest verdict is relining rather than rodding a flue that cannot actually be cleaned.
