Chimney Glossary

Every chimney term we use, explained without jargon. Bookmark this — it's the same vocabulary your insurance adjuster + home inspector will use.

Creosote

Tar-like residue from incomplete wood combustion. Highly flammable.

Condensed wood smoke that has settled on cool flue walls, ranging from black and sticky to hard and glassy. It grades into three stages: Stage 1 is dust, Stage 2 is crunchy, and Stage 3 is hard glaze, the form behind most chimney fires. Annual sweeping handles Stages 1–2; Stage 3 takes restoration.

NFPA 211

The US standard governing installation of chimney, fireplace, and vent systems.

The National Fire Protection Association code that governs chimney installation, inspection, and maintenance in the United States. Defines the three levels of inspection, clearance requirements, and creosote thresholds. Every TCE job follows NFPA 211.

Inspection Levels

Level 1 (annual), Level 2 (sale or event), Level 3 (concealed damage).

NFPA 211 defines three formal inspection tiers. Level 1 covers readily accessible areas and is recommended annually. Level 2 adds a video scope and is required after a property transfer, a system change, or any hazardous event such as a chimney fire, lightning, or earthquake. Level 3 is invasive, opening walls or the chase, and is used when Level 2 leaves concealed damage suspected.

Flue

The internal passage that carries combustion gases up and out of the structure.

Inside the chimney, the vertical channel that routes smoke, water vapor, and CO out of the house. Construction varies: unlined masonry (older, problematic), clay-tile lined (most masonry chimneys), or metal-lined (modern). Any crack in the flue is a fire hazard.

Liner

The inner channel of the flue, whether clay tile, stainless steel, or cast-in-place.

Lining material on the interior of the chimney flue. Modern code requires it be UL-listed, typically 316Ti or 316L stainless steel, to contain heat and gases. Cracked or missing, it is both a fire hazard and a code violation; relining is the standard fix.

Crown

The concrete cap at the very top of a masonry chimney.

Not the metal chimney cap: the crown is the poured concrete or stone slab covering the top course of a masonry chimney, there to shed water away from the masonry below. Once it cracks, water enters the masonry and freeze-thaw spalling accelerates. Hairline cracks take a crown coat sealing; serious damage means a full rebuild.

Chimney Cap

The metal cover-and-mesh assembly on top of the flue.

Mounted over the flue opening to control what passes in or out — rain, snow, animals, embers. Stainless steel lasts a lifetime; galvanized runs ~5 years. Mesh size is not cosmetic: NFPA 211 requires specific dimensions for spark arresting.

Spalling

Flaking of the brick face caused by trapped moisture working through freeze-thaw cycles.

Brick deterioration you can see — the outer face flakes, pops, or crumbles after water soaks in and freezes inside the brick. In DFW, freeze-thaw cycles plus humid summers speed the process up. Waterproofing slows spalling; rebuilding the affected sections is the only real fix.

Tuckpointing

Repointing or rebuilding the mortar joints between bricks.

Grinding failed mortar joints out and packing them with fresh, color-matched mortar, the trade that restores structural integrity and weather resistance alike. On DFW chimneys 20+ years old it is a routine finding.

Damper

The valve that opens/closes the flue.

Metal plate or valve that manages the flue: open, it lets smoke exit during a burn; closed, it seals the flue between fires. Two types exist — the traditional throat damper above the firebox, and the modern top damper at the very top, whose far tighter seal saves 30%+ on heat loss.

Smoke Chamber

The transition area between the firebox and the flue.

Directly above the firebox sits this angled, parging-lined space that funnels smoke into the narrower flue. Rough surfaces there let creosote deposit faster; smoothing them with refractory parging improves draft and cuts buildup.

CSIA

Chimney Safety Institute of America, the industry standard certification.

The non-profit that certifies professional chimney sweeps, inspectors, and reviewers in the US. CSIA-certified inspectors hold current credentials verifiable in the CSIA member directory. Every TCE field tech is CSIA-certified.

Firebox

The chamber where the fire actually burns.

The chamber that holds the burning fire, lined in brick or refractory panels. When those panels crack, we flag it as a fire-safety code violation on the report: heat can migrate through the breach to the combustible framing behind the wall. The panels have to match the spec for that fireplace make and model, and we verify that against the listing before signing off.

Throat

The narrowed opening just above the firebox.

The funneled brick section sitting directly above the firebox, where the damper lives and smoke first starts its climb into the smoke chamber. When a throat is sized wrong, we see smoking and draft complaints trace right back to it; a smoke-guard kit is frequently the cheapest fix that clears the finding.

Hearth

The floor of the firebox together with the protective floor extension in front of it.

This has two parts our inspection checks separately: the inner hearth, which is the firebox floor, and the hearth extension, the non-combustible projection that runs out in front of the firebox. IRC sets the extension depth at a minimum of 16" for fireboxes under 6 sq ft and 20" for anything larger, and we measure it against that.

Thimble

A sleeve fitting that lets a flue pass safely through a wall.

A UL-listed refractory or metal sleeve that carries a stove pipe safely through a combustible wall and into the chimney. On inspection we check its size and fit closely, because a thimble that is undersized or badly installed is one of the leading causes of wall fires we document.

Chase

The framed enclosure around a factory-built chimney.

The wood-framed, siding-clad rectangular box that conceals a metal factory-built chimney on the exterior of the house. When we camera and inspect for leaks, the chase top is the first suspect: it is the most common entry point for water and has to be flashed properly, with a cricket whenever the chase runs wider than 30".

Chase Cover

The metal lid that caps a chase.

A sloped sheet-metal cover that caps a chase enclosure and sheds water off it. On galvanized covers we routinely document rust-through inside 7 to 10 years, along with the orange staining it bleeds down the siding; stainless and copper covers hold up 25+ years, which is what we quote toward.

Cricket

The roof saddle that diverts water around a chimney.

A small ridge framed in behind the chimney on the roof's upslope side, built to steer water around the structure instead of letting it pond against it. IRC R1003.20 makes a cricket mandatory on any chimney wider than 30", and we cite that section when the finding calls for one.

Flashing

Metal sheeting that seals where chimney meets roof.

A proper waterproof seal is two layers: step flashing tucked under the shingles and counter-flashing set into the mortar joints. When we find a caulk-only repair we note it as failing, since those give out inside 2 years; doing it right means grinding fresh reglets into the brick to seat the counter-flashing.

Spark Arrestor

The mesh screen on a chimney cap that keeps embers from escaping.

The wire mesh element of a chimney cap. NFPA 211 sets the mesh openings no smaller than 3/8" and no larger than 1/2", tight enough to trap sparks (the mesh must not pass a 1/2" sphere) yet open enough to preserve draft. Many municipalities and all wildfire zones require it, and we verify the mesh against that spec on inspection.

Video Scope

Camera inspection of the inside of the flue.

A high-resolution camera on a flexible cable that we feed down the flue to document cracks, gaps, creosote buildup, animal nests, and displaced tile. This is the tool a Level 2 NFPA inspection requires, and it is the standard evidence expected before any insurance claim, so the finding rests on footage rather than a flashlight guess.

Carbon Monoxide Detector

Required safety device for fireplaces.

A UL-2034 listed CO detector with a digital readout, which we recommend on every floor and within 15 feet of every sleeping area whenever a fireplace is in the home. The sensors degrade over time, so plan to replace them every 7 years to keep the readout trustworthy.

Draft

Upward flow of air through the chimney.

The pressure differential between the inside of the chimney and the outside air that lifts combustion gases up and out. When draft goes weak we document smoking, backpuffing, and CO buildup traced to it. The fix depends on the cause: warming the flue, cracking a window, or correcting negative pressure inside the house.

Backdraft

Reverse airflow that pushes smoke or fumes back into the room.

When chimney draft fails and combustion byproducts reverse down the flue into the living space. The causes we look for are a cold flue, a blocked cap, negative house pressure from exhaust fans, or a competing taller flue pulling against it. Because this is a live CO risk, we treat it as a same-day diagnostic, not a wait-and-see item.

Refractory Panel

The replaceable firebox lining of a factory-built fireplace.

Pre-cast cement panels lining the firebox of a zero-clearance fireplace. On inspection, cracks wider than 1/16" or wider than a credit-card edge get written up as a code violation, because at that width heat can transfer through to the steel firebox shell and the framing around it. We measure the crack rather than eyeball it.

Zero-Clearance Fireplace

Factory-built fireplace that can be installed against framing.

A UL-listed manufactured fireplace assembly with built-in insulation and venting, engineered so it can sit directly against combustible framing. It is a different animal from a masonry fireplace, which matters on any repair: the replacement parts are specific to the model, and we verify them against the unit's listing.

Gas Valve

A manual or millivolt valve that controls gas flow to a log set.

The shut-off valve, usually found in the firebox floor, in a side wall, or behind a key on the hearth. Code requires that shut-off to be reachable without pulling the logs, and we confirm that on inspection. Millivolt valves rely on a thermopile-generated current to open the main valve.

Thermopile

The voltage-generating sensor that powers a gas valve.

A bundle of thermocouples that produces millivolts of electricity when the pilot flame heats it, and that current is what drives the main valve in a standing-pilot gas fireplace. When we service one, the test tells the story: 650 to 850 mV reads healthy, while anything below 300 mV is failing and gets flagged.

Thermocouple

Single sensor that holds the pilot valve open.

A single-junction temperature sensor that puts out roughly 25 mV once heated, holding the pilot's safety valve open. It is the failure point we replace most often on gas fireplaces, and at around $30 it is a routine maintenance swap rather than a major repair.

Parging

A smooth refractory mortar coating applied to the smoke chamber walls.

A refractory mortar troweled on to smooth the rough corbeled brick inside the smoke chamber. Code requires it on smoke chambers, and there is a safety reason we cite it: a parged chamber drafts better and cuts creosote accumulation dramatically, which is exactly what the inspection is protecting against.

Tile Relining

Swapping damaged clay flue tiles for new tile or a metal liner.

Once clay flue tiles crack or shift out of place, which is common after a chimney fire, the flue no longer passes and has to be relined. The routes we lay out are tile replacement, which means opening the masonry, a cast-in-place liner, or a stainless steel liner, the option chosen on most jobs today.

Fireback

Decorative cast-iron plate behind the fire.

An ornamental cast-iron or steel plate hung at the back of the firebox to shield the masonry and radiate heat back into the room. We see these mostly in heritage masonry fireplaces; modern factory-built units do not use them.

Flue Tile

Clay ceramic blocks stacked to form a chimney flue.

Terracotta blocks, rectangular or round and usually 24" tall, stacked vertically with thin mortar joints to form the inner channel of a masonry chimney. On the camera scan, any cracked, gapped, or displaced tile fails the inspection and puts the flue on the reline list.

Ash Dump

A hatch in the firebox floor that drops ash into a basement ash pit.

A small trap door set in the firebox floor of older masonry fireplaces that drops ash into a storage chamber reached from the basement or crawl space. We rarely find these on modern fireplaces, which are built without one, so the ash gets shoveled out instead.

Level 1 Inspection

Visual annual inspection of readily accessible areas.

The baseline annual inspection, covering the readily accessible portions of the chimney and its connections with nothing more specialized than a flashlight. We recommend running it every year ahead of heating season. It takes about 30 minutes and runs $99 to $149 in DFW.

Level 2 Inspection

A detailed inspection using a video scope, required for sales and after events.

This level adds attic and crawl space access along with a video scope run inside the flue. It is the inspection required after a property transfer, a fuel-source change, or a hazardous event such as a chimney fire, lightning, or seismic activity, and we also escalate to it when a Level 1 finding triggers the need. It runs $199 to $299 in DFW.

Level 3 Inspection

Invasive inspection involving removal of components or framing.

The inspection we move to when a Level 2 leaves concealed damage suspected. Reaching the hidden portions of the chimney can mean removing brick, drywall, or chase siding to get eyes on them. Because the access work varies so much, we do not price it blind; it is quoted only after the Level 2 defines what has to come apart.
