Above your damper and below the flue is a funnel-shaped transition called the smoke chamber, and on a great many older chimneys it's built from corbeled brick with rough, stepped, mortar-gapped walls. To an inspector, that roughness is a textbook finding: it disrupts the smooth flow of smoke, gives creosote countless ledges to cling to, and — the part that actually fails code — leaves open joints where heat can reach the surrounding framing. Parging is the code-recognized correction, and because the smoke chamber sits out of sight, it's one of the defects a thorough inspection catches and a quick firebox glance never does.
01What the smoke chamber does
The smoke chamber compresses the wide opening of the firebox down to the much smaller flue above it. For the chimney to draft properly, code expects that transition to be smooth and sloped so smoke accelerates cleanly upward. When the chamber is rough corbeled brick with exposed steps and open mortar joints, the draft turns turbulent, smoke lingers, and creosote builds on every ledge — which is why an inspector reads it as both a performance failure and a fire-safety one in the same finding.
02What parging is
Parging applies a smooth, code-compliant refractory coating over the smoke chamber walls, filling the open joints and turning the rough corbeled surface into a clean, sloped, sealed funnel that meets the standard. A properly parged smoke chamber drafts better, gives creosote far fewer places to accumulate, and — the reason it clears the finding — closes the gaps that let heat migrate toward the surrounding framing, restoring the clearance to combustibles the code requires. It's a fire-safety correction, not a cosmetic one.
03Why it's a fire-safety and code issue
An unparged smoke chamber with open joints is a direct clearance-to-combustibles violation: heat works through the gaps into the adjacent wood framing over years of fires, and that slow-ignition risk is one of the exact hazards a code inspection exists to catch and document. NFPA 211 and modern code call for the smoke chamber to be smooth and sealed. It's a frequent write-up precisely because it's out of sight — homeowners never see it, and any inspection that stops at the firebox never grades it.
