Gas Fireplace Pilot Won't Light? Start With These Checks
Most won't-light gas fireplaces come down to a handful of common, findable causes — and a clear line where DIY ends and certified gas service begins. Here's the safe order to check before you call.
A gas fireplace that won't light is frustrating, but the causes follow a logical order, and the first few you can safely rule out yourself before anyone comes out. The point of working through them in sequence isn't just to save a service call — it's to know exactly where the safe-DIY zone stops and a qualified gas technician has to take over. A safety note up front, because it overrides everything below: if you smell gas, stop, leave the house, and call your gas utility from outside; no troubleshooting step applies until that's ruled out.
01Start with gas and power
Confirm the obvious first, because these checks are safe and outside the gas path. Is the gas supply on — the shutoff valve at the appliance and the main both open? Has another gas appliance (a stove, a water heater) been working, which confirms gas is reaching the house? For units with electronic ignition, check that the fireplace has power and the batteries in the receiver or remote aren't dead. A surprising share of 'won't light' calls end right here, no technician required.
02The pilot and thermocouple
On a standing-pilot unit, the pilot flame has to heat a sensor called a thermocouple, which is the safety interlock that tells the gas valve it's okay to stay open. If the pilot lights but won't stay lit when you release the control knob, a worn or misaligned thermocouple is the classic cause. If the pilot won't light at all, the pilot orifice may be clogged with dust or debris. These are common, well-understood failures — but they sit inside the gas path, and that interlock is a safety device, which is exactly the line where self-troubleshooting stops and a qualified technician takes over.
03The thermopile and millivolt system
Many gas fireplaces run on a millivolt system where a component called the thermopile generates the small voltage that operates the main burner. A weak or failing thermopile is a frequent reason the pilot holds but the main burner won't fire, especially on an older unit. Diagnosing it means measuring millivolts against the valve's spec — a verification a qualified technician performs with a meter, not a step to improvise inside a live gas appliance.
04When to stop and call
If gas and power check out and the pilot still won't light or hold, the next steps are inside the gas and ignition system — and that's the hard line. A gas appliance isn't the place to improvise: a misadjusted valve or a botched ignition repair is a safety failure, not a comfort one. Have it serviced by a qualified technician who'll diagnose the thermocouple, thermopile, valve, and ignition to spec and verify safe operation before leaving — the same confirmation an inspection of the appliance would demand.
A won't-light gas fireplace usually traces to gas supply, power and batteries, a tired thermocouple, a clogged pilot, or a weak thermopile — roughly in that order. Rule out the supply-and-power basics yourself, and the moment the trail leads into the gas path, hand it to a qualified technician who can verify safe operation rather than working inside the system blind. And always treat a gas smell as a stop-everything-and-leave event, never a troubleshooting step.
